11-Year-Old South Side Girl Hangs Herself

DCFS says hers is the third child suicide in three weeks

Just weeks after the stunning suicide of a 10-year-old boy in suburban Evanston, Chicago police are investigating the death of an 11-year-old girl who hanged herself in her South Side home.

The girl was found late Wednesday by her father, hanging from a clothing hook in a closet.   An autopsy Thursday confirmed the girl hung herself to death.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is not investigating the girl's death at this time, but the agency says this is the third death by suicide of a child of that age in Illinois in the past three weeks.

Aquan Lewis, 10, was discovered hanging by his shirt collar from a hook inside a restroom at Oakton Elementary School in Evanston on Feb. 3. Police and the medical examiner’s office have determined Aquan’s death was a suicide.

A third child also killed himself outside of Springfield. Additional details about that death were not immediately available.
