Rahm's Jobs Mentor Hits Town

Since winning the job of Mayor of Chicago in February, Rahm Emanuel has talked about jobs non-stop.

He talked about jobs as mayor-elect. He talked about jobs during his inauguration, and in the 40+ days since he took office he's been out on a weekly basis talking about job creation.

Tuesday Emanuel announce 300 new jobs for the city thanks to AllScripts, a health services company. Wednesday he announced 600 jobs for Walgreens.

All told, Emanuel says he's been integral in bringing more than 3,500 jobs to Chicago since the start of his term, just 44 days ago.

Emanuel learned from a master.

Bill Clinton, who brings his Clinton Global Initiative to Chicago Wednesday, put up more impressive stats. During his first two years as president, Clinton created 6 million new jobs -- or about 250,000 per month.

Emanuel, obviously, is working on a much smaller scale than his economic mentor, but it's worth noting that both men are still talking about the same thing.

Jobs, jobs, jobs. And both men will talk together about the challenges to creating jobs in urban and rural areas during the morning kick off to the June 29 and 30 Clinton Global Initiative conference, held at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers.

Clinton has also invited Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, and close to 700 business leaders, politicians and non-profit associations to the conference, which this time around will focus on small businesses and entrepreneurship.

There's a reason Clinton chose Chicago to talk about jobs, and it's not just because his former aide, Emanuel, is running the place.

“[It's] because the city is representative of the challenges confronting communities around the country, is home to some of the most influential companies in the U.S and has been a leader in creating jobs through investments in clean energy, a commitment to early childhood education and a renewed focus on technology,” according to a press release.
