Bundle up this weekend, runners, because it's going to be a cold one. But if you still want to get your race on, here are four events happening in the Chicago area that you might want to try.
Saturday, January 25:
- Fox Valley Winter Challenge Trail Series 5K Race 1 - 10 a.m. at the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center in St. Charles. Sign up here for the first and shortest of a three race series, registration is $40 for one and $100 for all three.
- F^3 Lake Half Marathon - 10 a.m. at Montrose Harbor in Chicago. Do you like half marathons in the fall, but crave the thrill of 13.1 in freezing temperatures? Look no further than the F^3 Lake Half Marathon. Registration is $70, and participants receive shirts, swag, photos, and more-- including an afterparty at Deuce's and the Cubby Bear in Wrigleyville.
Sunday, January 26
- 4th Annual Frozen Zucchini Snowshoe Adventure - 10 a.m. at Citizen Park in Barrington. It's a 5K snowshoe race through the prairie and wooded trails. $40 race-day registration (and $10 snowshoe rental fee, or you can bring your own). Prizes for the top finishers and a goodie bag for all participants, as well as a hot chocolate and coffee station. Proceeds benefit Smart Farm.
- Aon Step Up for Kids challenge - 8 a.m. at the Aon Center in Chicago (200 East Randolph Street). While it's not a flat-out street race, you can test your skills climbing 80 floors to the top of one of Chicago's tallest buildings. Full and half climb registration available, and fee for adults is $45 plus and $80 minimum fundraising commitment. Proceeds go to families and children at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, and participants receive a t-shirt, and food, drink, and live entertainment at the afterparty. Online registration is closed but you can register at packet pick-up at Fleet Feet (1620 N. Wells) today from 3 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Race-day registration available as well.
So if you're brave enough to weather the cold this weekend, check these races out and let us know-- where are you racing?
