The Chicago Blackhawks added to their forward depth on Thursday as they acquired Jiri Sekac from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for winger Ryan Garbutt.

Sekac has three points in 22 games with the Ducks so far this season, but is primarily known as a defensive forward. He led the Ducks in Corsi Against Per 60 during his time in Anaheim, registering a 42.39 in a category that reflects how many shot attempts a team has against a player per game.

As for Garbutt, the Blackhawks acquired the forward in the trade that sent Patrick Sharp to Dallas, and after a solid start with the team, he’s slowly seen his minutes and his usage decrease. He scored two goals and dished out four assists with the Blackhawks, and he also had 94 hits in the 43 games he played with the Hawks.

The Blackhawks have now traded both players that they acquired in the Sharp trade, shipping Trevor Daley to Pittsburgh in exchange for Rob Scuderi earlier this season.

With the trade, the Blackhawks are looking to not only improve their forward depth from a defensive perspective, but they’re also getting younger. Sekac is just 23 years old, and he’ll be a restricted free agent at the end of the season. With his low point total, it’s hard to imagine that he’ll get much of a raise, if any, and the Blackhawks could look to him as a player they can hold onto for several seasons in a defensive or penalty killing role.
