With potentially record-setting cold in the forecast for the Chicago area, Cook County officials are preparing to open warming centers for residents needing a safe place to stay warm.

According to an email from the Cook County Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security, the warming centers will be activated in coming days as unseasonable cold settles into the region.

On Tuesday, the high temperature in Chicago is expected to only reach the low-20s, with lows in the mid-teens. Wind chills could drop even further, approaching zero degrees in some locations.
