Strong anticipated winds coupled with the weight of ice accumulations on Chicago-area trees and power lines could produce significant power outages, weather officials and ComEd warned Tuesday.

A Wind Advisory begins at 2 p.m. for much of the Chicago metro area until 3 a.m. Wednesday ahead of potential wind gusts between 45 and 50 mph. The strong winds could lead to downed power lines and tree limbs and the potential for power outages.

Thousands were already without power Tuesday morning as ice blanketed several suburbs and the city.

ComEd has mobilized additional crews to handle outages through the evening, the utility said, and reminded customers to take precautions in the event power goes out or power lines go down.
