The Chicago area is in for another wild weather roller coaster.

Thursday morning began overcast and rainy, with fog and precipitation impacting the morning commute.

A Winter Weather Advisory remained in effect through 9 a.m. for DeKalb, Kane, Lake and McHenry counties for freezing rain with total ice accumulations of one- to two-tenths of an inch in the north and northwest suburbs. A Winter Weather Advisory for the same in LaSalle County was scheduled to last through 6 a.m.

A few unseasonable, isolated strong thunderstorms are then possible Thursday morning through early afternoon as the day turns windy and milder. High temperatures are expected to range from the upper 30s in northwest counties to the 40s in the metro area and even the mid 50s in northwest Indiana before quickly falling with the passage of a cold front late Thursday afternoon and evening.

Rain may mix with or change to snow showers Thursday evening as it turns sharply colder, but little to no accumulation is expected. Any light snow showers or flurries end early Thursday night, becoming windy and much colder. Lows fall into the single digits in more areas overnight, with windchill readings between minus 10 and minus 20 degrees by dawn.

Friday looks partly sunny, breezy and much colder with highs in the teens. Lake-effect snow showers will be possible east in the Michiana snow belts.

While Saturday stays mostly sunny and cold in the low to mid 20s, we could see light snow Sunday afternoon and evening.

The next chance for snow could come late Tuesday.
