White Sox Pitcher Dylan Cease Cleared Amid COVID Precaution

Dylan Cease available Friday after getting COVID all-clear originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Dylan Cease will travel with the White Sox to Boston and will be available for his scheduled start Friday against the Red Sox.

Cease was placed on the injured list Wednesday, a precaution as he was displaying some symptoms of COVID-19. He did not test positive, though, and the White Sox hoped it would be a brief stay away from the team.

The right-hander received the all-clear to be with the team Thursday, and after the game, manager Tony La Russa relayed that Cease had tested negative and received clearance to join the White Sox on their flight to Boston.

"Middle of (Thursday's) game, ... (White Sox trainer) James Kruk came out and said the tests are negative, that (Cease) would be on the plane with us and therefore available to pitch," La Russa said. "That's good news."

If Cease does, indeed, come off the injured list ahead of his scheduled start Friday, the White Sox will have to make a move. They brought relief pitcher Zack Burdi up from the alternate training site Wednesday, but he did not pitch in either game he was active for.

Cease has allowed four runs across 9 1/3 innings in his two starts this season. He's struck out nine batters and walked six. The White Sox start a four-game series with the red-hot Red Sox on Friday. Boston's won nine of its last 10 games.
