MLB Rumors: Cubs to Attend Free Agent Carlos Rodón's Workout

The Cubs' search for starting pitching depth could lead them to a familiar Chicago face.

The Cubs plan to watch former White Sox starter Carlos Rodón throw this week, according to WSCR's Bruce Levine.

Rodón, 28, is a potential buy-low arm for the Cubs. The left-hander has been beset by a number of arm injuries in recent seasons — making just 39 starts from 2017-19 — and the Sox non-tendered him last month after six seasons on the South Side.

Rodón missed the first few months of 2017 with a left biceps ailment. He underwent shoulder surgery that September, sidelining him until June 2018. After making seven starts in 2019, he underwent Tommy John surgery, returning in time for the delayed 2020 season.

He exited his second start this past season with left shoulder soreness, which kept him out until September.

Rodón holds a career 4.14 ERA in 97 outings (92 starts) and could give the Cubs another veteran arm to eat some innings in 2021. Starters' innings fell dramatically in 2020 due to the shortened season, and with the schedule expected to return closer to 162 games, rotation depth will be important.

With Jon Lester signing with the Nationals, the Cubs rotation currently projects to be heavy on right-handers in Kyle Hendricks, Zach Davies, Adbert Alzolay and Alec Mills. They recently signed Shelby Miller, another right-hander, to a minor league deal.

Other arms in the pipeline include righties Tyson Miller and Cory Abbott, and lefties Justin Steele and Brailyn Marquez.
