Cubs' Steven Souza's rousing David Ross endorsement: ‘He's built for this job'

The rousing endorsements for Cubs manager David Ross continue to flood in, the latest coming from outfielder Steven Souza Jr. on Tuesday.

Souza is entering his first year with the Cubs and offered a glowing review for what his experience playing under Ross has been thus far.

"Unbelievable, man. He's built for this job," Souza told reporters on Tuesday.

On Monday, Cubs catcher Willson Contreras said Ross "gives us the support we need every single day, and that's something special for this team." Saturday, Jon Lester said Ross "cares" and his energy "rubs off on us and it makes us enjoy our day and coming in here and getting our work done.

Souza, who missed all of last season after sustaining a gruesome knee injury in March, echoed those comments.

"[Ross] said something the other day, which I think a lot of managers could benefit from, and that's caring about the player first and then the results," Souza said. "I think when you do that, you put everybody in the right place, and you can feel that.

"You can feel when it's genuine; you can feel when somebody's trying to fake their way through it. I've been blessed with great managers and he fits that mold as well, to be able to care for you first and really level with you, but at the same time motivate you to pick up the slack and do your job."

Ross, like any manager, will eventually be judged on wins and losses, but his players' comments show the early impact he's had as the Cubs skipper.
