Cubs Injuries: Nico Hoerner, Matt Duffy, David Bote Progressing

Injured Cubs infielders progressing in recoveries originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

A trio of Cubs infielders sidelined with injuries are “progressing well” in their recoveries, manager David Ross said Saturday.

Matt Duffy (May 25), Nico Hoerner (May 26) and David Bote (May 30) all landed on the IL within a one-week span last month.

Ross said Duffy is “leading the group” as far as recovery goes. The 30-year-old hasn’t played since May 22 due to a low back strain but took batting practice and groundballs this week in San Diego.

Asked if Duffy is closing in on a rehab assignment, Ross said “sure.”

Ross said Hoerner continues to strengthen his left hamstring after the 24-year-old strained it running to first base on a bunt attempt May 25 against the Pirates.

Bote took light, two-handed swings in the cage this week with good feedback, according to Ross. The 28-year-old dislocated his left shoulder sliding into second base May 29.

“They’re all on their programs to come back,” Ross said. “Timeline stuff is still TBD, but everybody’s doing well.”

Ross added reliever Justin Steele continues strengthening his right hamstring after straining it May 20 against the Nationals. The lefty has a bullpen scheduled in the next several days.

“Everything seems to be on the up and up and moving in the right direction,” Ross said.
