Cubs bullpen reinforcements are on their way.

Left-hander Andrew Chafin pitched a simulated game on Wednesday, throwing about 20-23 pitches, according to Cubs general manager David Ross.

“Threw well, looked great, faced hitters,” Ross said, “I thought looked really sharp.”

Ross declined to specify a next step for Chafin but did agree it was “conceivable” that Chafin could return from the injured list for the Cubs’ three-game series against the Twins this weekend.

Chafin was already on the 10-day IL with a finger sprain on his left hand when the Cubs acquired him from the Diamondbacks at the trade deadline.

Southpaw José Quintana (left lat inflammation) is also nearing a return. He threw a “touch and feel” bullpen session on Wednesday and is scheduled for a sim game later in the week. Traditionally a starter, Quintana will likely join the bullpen at least initially after returning from the IL.
