Andrew Luck Retiring From NFL at Age of 29

Luck was the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft

The NFL world is reeling after it was revealed that Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck plans to retire from football at the age of 29.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Luck met with Colts owner Jim Irsay to inform him of his decision Saturday and told his teammates in the locker room after the game of the move.

"I've been stuck in this process," he said after the game. "I haven't been able to live the life I want to live. It's taken the joy out of this game. The only way forward for me is to remove myself from football."

After the Colts' game against the Chicago Bears on Saturday night, Luck was booed as he walked off the field by fans at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Luck spoke to reporters after the game, and confirmed that he was stepping away from the NFL.

"This is the hardest decision of my life, but it's the right decision for me," he said.

Jacoby Brissett will take over as the Colts’ starting quarterback for the 2019 season.

Luck, the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, threw for 23,671 yards and 171 touchdowns in six NFL seasons. He missed the entire 2017 season due to injury. After appearing in all 16 games in 2018, Luck has missed time during the preseason with a calf strain and pain in his lower left leg, and has reportedly decided to call it quits on his NFL career.

During the Colts’ game against the Bears, Luck was seen on the sidelines chatting with teammates, and fans in the stands were seen removing their jerseys after the news began to filter out.
