Giannoulias Releases Tax Returns

Alexi Giannoulias is not a poor man.

The state treasurer, who's gunning for the Senate seat now held by Roland Burris, made millions of dollars from his family's community bank since 2006 according to four years of tax returns he released Wednesday.

Giannoulias released his returns the day before Thanksgiving, a day when few people are scrutinizing the news. He has been criticized by Democratic Senate opponent David Hoffman for large Broadway Bank payouts to him and his family.

According to the Tribune, there were $70 million in payouts in 2007 and 2008. Giannoulias' campaign said the payouts were triggered by the 2006 death of Giannoulias' father, Alexis, who founded Broadway Bank.

According to the returns, Giannoulias reported income of at least $1.3 million annually for three of the last four years. Last year, as Broadway Bank struggled financially, Giannoulias saw his income drop to $361,000.
