Dorm Implodes at Western Illinois University

A former dormitory at Western Illinois University was imploded Saturday after decades of use.

Hundreds showed up on the Macomb campus to watch the implosion of Higgins Hall, which lasted just three seconds.

University officials decided to bring the building down after an assessment revealed several issues that would take an estimated $48 million to repair.

The 50-year-old structure had leaking walls and windows, unreliable elevators, broken sprinkler and air conditioning systems, as well as leaking pipes.

Debris clean-up took several hours, with the complete demolition project expected to wrap up in October.
