Up in Smoke: House Fire Destroys Pot Lab

130 plants, 10 pounds of dried pot, grow-lights, ventilation equipment siezed

What started as an attempt to put out a small house fire overnight turned into a pretty hefty drug bust.

Chicago firefighters put out a small fire on the first floor of a home on North Christiana Avenue in the North Park neighborhood.

While checking the second floor for residents, they found a “sophisticated” marijuana growing operation.

Investigators at the scene filled up a police squadrol with not only marijuana, but the lights and ventilation equipment used in the grow lab.

Police said they cleared out over 100 cannabis plants and 10 pounds of dried marijuana. They took one person into custody.

One firefighter was injured when his face was cut by glass, Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said.
