Taxi Passenger Killed in Loop Crash: Police

Authorities say a man riding in a taxi was killed in a two-vehicle crash Thursday in the Loop.

Hans Monroy, 33, was in a southbound taxi in the 100 block of North Wacker Drive at 9:03 p.m. when the cab made a left turn onto eastbound Washington Street and hit a Ford Mustang that was northbound on Wacker, authorities said.

Monroy, of the 400 block of East Illinois Street, suffered internal injuries and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Monroy's brother Alexander Monroy said his brother grew up in suburban Burbank, loved to travel and was scheduled to leave for Miami on Friday.

"His nieces and nephew loved him," Alexander Monroy said. "He was brilliant, kind, hilarious, and it's a shame our mother has to bury him."

Two other men in the cab, the 37-year-old driver and a 32-year-old passenger, both refused medical treatment, police said. The man driving the Mustang and a woman who was riding with him, both 24, also refused treatment. All were listed in good condition.

The police Major Accidents Investigation Unit and Area Central detectives are investigating the crash, according to police. Citations were pending against both the driver of the taxi and the driver of the Mustang as of Friday morning, Chicago police said.

The taxi failed to yield the right of way on a left turn, according to police, who said the Mustang was traveling above the speed limit.
