Swim Advisories, Bans Issued for 13 Chicago Beaches Ahead of Holiday Weekend

More than a dozen Chicago beaches were under a swim advisory or ban Friday ahead of Labor Day weekend.

Monday, Sept. 5 marks the official end of the Chicago Park District’s 2016 beach season, leaving the long holiday as the last chance for beachgoers to get into the waters of Lake Michigan.

Unfortunately, of the 27 public beaches in the city, only about half are without restrictions. City officials have issued swim advisories or bans on the following beaches:

SWIM BAN

  • Oak Street Beach due to hazardous surf (Gold Coast)
  • Fargo Beach due to hazardous surf, high water levels (Rogers Park)

SWIM ADVISORY

  • Calumet Beach due to water quality (East Side)
  • Foster Beach due to rough surf (Uptown)
  • Hartigan Beach due to rough surf (Rogers Park)
  • Helen Doria Beach due to rough surf (Rogers Park)
  • Lane Beach due to rough surf, water quality (Edgewater)
  • Margaret T Burroughs Beach due to rough surf (Burnham Park)
  • Montrose Beach due to water quality (Uptown)
  • North Avenue Beach due to water quality (Gold Coast)
  • North Shore Beach due to rough surf (Rogers Park)
  • Osterman Beach due to rough surf, water quality (Edgewater)
  • Tobey Prinz Beach due to rough surf (Rogers Park)

Fourteen of Chicago’s beaches are swimmable without restrictions, including:

NO-RESTRICTIONS: 12th Street Beach, 57th Street Beach, 63rd Street Beach, Howard Beach, Humboldt Beach, Juneway Beach, Leone Beach, Loyola Beach, Marion Mahony Griffin Beach, Oakwood Beach, Ohio Street Beach, Rainbow Beach, Rogers Beach and South Shore Beach.
