Dolton Man Dies in Water Slide Accident

Investigators are still unsure of the exact cause of death for a 21-year-old Dolton man who was found unresponsive at the bottom of a popular water slide at a Georgia waterpark.

Sergio Edwards, a graduate of Thornridge High School in Dolton, was found in the water at the bottom of the Fun Dunker water slide of the metro Atlanta-area Lake Lanier Islands Resort on Monday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

He died Tuesday at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Georgia.

Lifeguards reportedly administered CPR before Hall County emergency responders arrived, but their combined efforts weren't enough to save Edwards' life. Lake Lanier Islands reported that upon inspection, they concluded that the slide had been functioning properly.

The cause of death has yet to be determined, but Hail County officials believe it is possible that Edwards hit his head on the way down the slide, rendering him unconscious.

Edwards was a strong swimmer and known for his athleticism, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported . He was a karate instructor for Just for Kicks in Chicago and was scheduled to teach a karate class on Saturday and compete in a competition on Sunday.
