Relief will eventually come for Chicago area residents tired of the scorching heat, but Saturday will still be a hot one as an Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect through the evening hours.

Temperatures Saturday will once again soar into the mid 90s, with some areas even creeping into the high 90s, according to forecast models.

Heat indices will make it feel even hotter than that, as heat index readings are expected to climb to nearly 110 degrees in some locations.

The hot weather has already led to service modifications on Metra Electric Line trains, and caused the cancellation of the Rock ‘n’ Roll 5K race that was set for Saturday morning in the city. Sunday’s 10K and half-marathon are still expected to be held, but will be modified if runners choose a shorter course option, organizers said.

As the day wears on Saturday, scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop and move into the area, with some storms potentially producing heavy rains. Some of the storms could even be severe, with gusty winds and hail possible.

On Sunday the relief will finally arrive, as high temperatures will drop back to more seasonal levels in the high 70s to low 80s across the area.
