The incident was reported around 2 p.m., but little information on what happened was released. CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said an officer assisting a tactical team was "shot by an assailant." The officer was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where their condition was not known.

On social media, Rauner thanked the state police Protective Services Unit in a since-deleted tweet, but was in Springfield at the time of the shooting. Another tweet thanked Chicago police.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and colleagues of the officer tragically lost in a shooting at the Thompson Center today,” Rauner tweeted.

A heavy police presence was still visible in the area about 4 p.m.
