It may be getting a bit more expensive to buy a gun in Cook County.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle announced a plan Wednesday to implement a $25 tax on gun purchases.
The proposed gun tax would bring in an estimated $600,000 in revenue, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Preckwinkle also announced a $2 million fund that would go toward non-profit organizations that promote anti-violence.
"There are responsible gun owners in Cook County who use firearms for either protection or recreation. However, the social and enconomic cost of the criminal and irresponsible use is very high. As a result, Cook County residents are paying for the negative impact of a product that only a small portion our population uses," Preckwinkle said.
Preckwinkle dropped plans for a 5 cent bullet tax that could have raised an additional $400,000, but said she would continue to review it over the next year.
