11 in Custody After Police-Involved Shooting in Little Village

Nearly a dozen people were in police custody Wednesday after an officer-involved shooting on Chicago's Southwest Side.

The shooting happened just before 9 p.m. Tuesday near 26th Street and Albany Avenue in the city's Little Village neighborhood, according to authorities.

Police responding to a call of "shots fired" in the area at the time noticed a large gathering in the 2500 block of South Albany. As they began dispersing the crowd, a vehicle trying to flee the scene began driving straight toward the officers, according to a release from police.

The officers opened fire, but no one was shot, authorities said. Eight officers were injured in the incident, each with "varying degrees of injury," according to police. At least one had a broken hand and another suffered cuts to the face from a broken bottle, which required stitches.

The officers were listed in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Six juveniles and five adults were taken into custody following the incident. Charges were pending, police said.
