Person Fatally Struck by Metra Train in Downers Grove

Both inbound and outbound trains on the BNSF Line were halted after the crash, extensive delays are expected

A pedestrian was fatally struck by a Metra train Wednesday morning in west suburban Downers Grove.

BNSF Train No. 1252, running express from Aurora and scheduled to arrive at Union Station at 8:34 a.m., struck a pedestrian near the Downers Grove Main Street station just after 8 a.m., according to Metra spokeswoman Meg Thomas-Reile.

The DuPage County coroner’s office confirmed the pedestrian was killed, but did not immediately provide additional information.

Train No. 1252 remains stopped as of 11:15 a.m., according to Metra’s website. Train No. 1264, which was scheduled to leave Aurora at 10:20 a.m., is on the move, running 35-40 minutes late. Extensive delays are expected.
