CPD Officer Accidentally Shoots Himself in Bridgeview Courthouse

The officer picked up a gun and it accidentally fired, shooting him in the leg

A Chicago police officer was injured after he accidentally shot himself inside a southwest suburban courthouse Wednesday morning.

The officer went to retrieve his weapon from a storage locker after an alarm malfunction in the Bridgeview courthouse prompted an evacuation of the building. When he picked up the gun, it accidentally fired and the officer was shot in the leg, according to Ben Breit, a spokesperson for the Cook County sheriff's office.

The officer was transported to an area hospital and is expected to be OK, Breit said.

No one else was injured in the incident, according to the sheriff's office.
