New Hangar Unveiled at O'Hare is Airport's Largest

The facility, built for American Airlines, now stands at 11 stories tall and is made up of more than 7,000 tons of steel

A brand new hangar is set to be unveiled at O’Hare International Airport becoming the largest hangar at the airport and the first such addition in 30 years.

It is the latest addition in a series of projects in an $8.5 billion expansion at the airport.

The facility, built for American Airlines, now stands at 11 stories tall and is made up of more than 7,000 tons of steel. It can house up to 737 aircraft at one time and at least two 787 Dreamliners.

The new hangar cost about $215 million and created about 1,000 construction jobs, officials said.

With the project now finished, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office said it will clear the way for the airport’s final runway, expected to be finished in 2020.
