Mob Hit Man Gets Life in Prison

Convict's brother testified against him

Convicted loan shark and hit man Frank Calabrese Sr. has been sentenced to life in prison after being convicted in Chicago's biggest mob trial in decades.

The court held Calabrese responsible for more than a dozen killings.   In a double-cross worthy of the Godfather movies, Calabrese's own brother testified against him, saying Frank strangled victims with a rope and then cut their throats to make sure they were dead.

U.S. District Judge James B. Zagel told Calabrese his crimes were "unspeakable" and the sentence is "just."

Relatives of the victims, many of them crying, told how Calabrese's murders had affected their families.

Calabrese was among five defendants convicted in the Family Secrets trial in September 2007. They were convicted for taking part in a racketeering conspiracy that included gambling, loan sharking, extortion and murder.
