Man Killed in Police-Involved Shooting Was Suspect in Pennsylvania Murder

The man killed in a police-involved shooting in north suburban Lakemoor early Thursday was a suspect in a Pennsylvania murder, officials have confirmed.

36-year-old Kenneth E. Martell of Meadville, PA was parked in a very remote area, and an officer approached his vehicle to investigate, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office,

Martell then pulled two handguns on the officer, and after a struggle ensued, the officers opened fire and struck the man, police said.

The shooting took place at around 6 a.m. near the intersection of Four Seasons and Sullivan Lake Blvds.

Both officers were taken to local hospitals for evaluation after the incident. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Lake County Sheriff's Office, Martell was wanted in connection with a homicide that took place in Crawford County in Pennsylvania earlier in the week.

According to Pennsylvania police, Martell is believed to have killed 82-year-old Theodore M. Garver either Monday night or Tuesday morning, and that Martell used a handgun to threaten three individuals and intimidate them into helping him dispose of the body.

Lake County officials are continuing to work with Pennsylvania law enforcement as the investigation into both crimes continues.
