Cops: Man Caught Burglarizing Elgin Officer's Home

The burglary was interrupted by the officer himself

A 21-year-old Elgin man was arrested this week for allegedly breaking into the home of a police officer who lives on his block.

Elgin Police said Ryan Hukill of the 500 block of Redtail Ridge broke into the officer’s home on Redtail Wednesday evening and was interrupted around 8:15 p.m. by the officer himself.

Police said the 17-year veteran of the department returned home from his afternoon patrol shift and noticed a screen missing from a window and a light on in the second floor apartment.

The officer saw Hukill in a second-floor bedroom window, and Hukill took off through the front door, where he was arrested.

Hukill took a set of handcuffs and may have tried to pry open a gun safe, police said. No weapons were taken.
