June 30 is the deadline for state legislators to pass a budget, but it isn’t clear if Gov. Bruce Rauner and House Speaker Michael Madigan will be able to avoid a potential state government shutdown if a deal is not made. NBC 5’s Charlie Wojciehowski reports.
The four leaders of the Illinois General Assembly met with Gov. Bruce Rauner on Monday, less than 48 hours before a deadline to have a state budget deal in place.
Democratic legislative leaders reported no progress.
The Republican governor and lawmakers have been at a stalemate for weeks over a spending plan for the 2016 fiscal year, which starts Wednesday. Rauner wants spending cuts and business reforms; Democrats say they need to fund vital services with a tax increase, along with cuts.
Chicago Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton attended. Their spokesmen said no progress was made toward a resolution.
The General Assembly is in session Tuesday. Rauner is attempting to find agreement for a plan to keep paying state workers if the standoff continues.
