A 24-year-old man was shot and killed as Lake County Sheriff's officers executed a search warrant in suburban Beach Park Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

According to police, the Lake County Sheriff's Warrants Team and a U.S. Marshall's Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force were attempting to take a 24-year-old Waukegan man into custody. The man was wanted in connection with a 2018 murder in Zion, said Sgt. Christopher Covelli with the sheriff's office.

Police had received information the wanted man was in the Beach Park area. Around 12:30 p.m., officers approached a home in the 38500 block of North Green Bay Road, an armed man got out of a car and opened fire, Covelli said.

Officers returned fire and the man was shot an unknown number of times. Covelli said officers performed first aid and other live-saving measures before he was taken to an area hospital, where he ultimately died.

The man's identity was not released as of Tuesday afternoon.

Two officers also went to area hospitals, one with a laceration injury to his arm and a second for evaluation.

There were multiple people, including a child, inside the home at the time of the shooting, but none were injured, Covelli said.

An independent investigation is underway, according to Detective Heather Cognac, a spokesperson for Lake County Major Crimes Task Force.

Police said the 2018 Zion murder happened in December, when an 18-year-old was shot and killed. Other details weren't immediately released but police said as many as four others had already been arrested in the case.
