Woman, 24, Charged With DUI in Wrong-Way I-55 Crash

Roadway was reopened to traffic by 3:45 a.m.

A 24-year old woman was charged with driving under the influence early Friday morning after a wrong-way crash in southwest suburban Bolingbrook that closed the northbound lanes of Interstate 55.

Illinois State Police said Yarelie Melgarejo of Plainfield drove a red 1997 Ford Explorer onto the Bolingbrook exit ramp and began heading southbound in northbound lanes shortly after 2 a.m

Melgarejo then crashed into two vehicles at Route 53 -- a black 2011 Toyota Sienna and a black 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche, police said. One person was in each vehicle, and Melgarejo, a 21-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man were taken to hospitals for treatment, police said.

A motorist named David Briggs came upon the crash and said he assisted in pulling one man out of a truck that rolled over.

The injuries to the drivers were not life-threatening, an official told NBC Chicago.

The roadway was reopened to traffic as of 3:45 a.m.
