Illinois Could Lose 2 Congressional Seats, Study Finds

Illinois could lose one of its 18 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives if the state’s population continues to decline.

Illinois dropped to the sixth most populated state at the end of last year, according to census data. The state bled 33,703 residents from 2016 to 2017. Because of this, according to a report from political consulting firm Election Data Services, Illinois could lose a single district 2020.

Not only that, but the report also says the state is “dangerously close” to losing a second seat if the exodus persists.

States like California, Minnesota and Texas, among others, are also in danger of losing legislative representation, the report reads.

Seven other states, including Arizona, Colorado, Florida and Montana could gain districts, the report finds.
