IDOT Worker Dies in Central Illinois Accident

49-year-old Michael Holmes killed in the accident

State officials say an Illinois Department of Transportation worker has died in an accident in Stark County in central Illinois.

IDOT Secretary Ann Schneider says 49-year-old Michael Holmes of Wyoming died in the accident. She says he was a monthly snowbird worker for IDOT. She says he had been with the IDOT winter operations team since November 2007.

“The safety of our workers always will be a top priority at IDOT and we are working with law enforcement authorities who are investigating this incident," Schneider said. "My thoughts and prayers are with our employee’s family, friends and coworkers during this difficult time.”

State officials say law enforcement authorities are investigating the case.

No details of the accident were provided.

Gov. Pat Quinn also issued a statement, saying he was ordering the state's flag to be flown at half-staff to honor Holmes. Quinn called Holmes a hero.

"He gave his life while making our roads safer for his fellow citizens," Quinn said. "Michael selflessly faced challenging conditions every winter since 2007 so the rest of us could arrive safely at our destinations.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and fellow employees during this difficult time."
