Gunman Barricades Himself in Apartment After Shooting 2 Women, Police Say

Authorities said an 89-year-old woman was killed and a 39-year-old woman was in stable condition after being shot in the face

A gunman barricaded himself inside an apartment after shooting two women, one fatally, early Monday on Chicago's South Side, according to police.

Authorities said the incident, which prompted a SWAT team response, took place at around 1:30 a.m. in the 7000 block of South Prairie Avenue in the city's Park Manor neighborhood.

Officers responding to a call of a disturbance discovered a 39-year-old woman inside the stairwell of a building with a gunshot wound to the face, according to police. She was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in stable condition, officials said.

The woman told police that a male inside the building fired shots and then barricaded himself inside a second floor apartment.

Officers later found an 89-year-old woman with a gunshot wound, according to police, who said she was pronounced dead at the scene. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office did not immediately confirm the fatality and further details, including her identity, were not available.

A SWAT team was on the scene for several hours, according to police, who said the incident appeared to be domestic in nature.

At around 8 a.m., authorities said a 19-year-old man was taken into custody in connection with the shootings and taken to St. Bernard Hospital.
