Get to Know Chicago-Area Shelters Participating in Pet Adoption Event

The pet adoption initiative takes place nationwide from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 18

NBC 5 and Telemundo Chicago are teaming up with animal shelters across the Chicago area to waive adoption fees across and help pets in need find forever homes. The pet adoption initiative known as Clear the Shelters takes place nationwide 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 18. 

Get to know this year's participating animal shelters below. Adoption policies for each shelter still apply during the Clear the Shelters event.

A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter has placed over 20,000 dogs and cats into permanent and loving homes since its inception in 1989.

Animal Outreach Humane Society

Cicero Waggin' Tails Animal Shelter contains animals that have already been checked by a vet--temperament tested, have had a parvo test, been de-wormed and given their distemper, Bordetella and rabies shots. All pets are also spayed/neutered and micro-chipped before leaving the shelter with their new, adoptive family.

DuPage County Animal Care & Control is a self-supporting shelter for stray and owner-relinquished non-native animals. They rescue animals that are lost, diseased, injured, or in peril. They also aim to prevent and control rabies through vaccinations prior to being adopted out to their new families.

Michiana Humane Society & SPCA's dogs have been tested for heartworm (dogs that test positive may be undergoing treatment and people can check for those listings on their site), and are treated for fleas, ticks, or other parasites. Spay and Stay attempts to connect and collaborate with compassionate individuals in Lake County to humanely control the population of feral and stray cats.
