Fundraiser Launched to Pay for Funerals of Brothers Killed in Back of the Yards Fire

The brothers were in the attic of the residence when the fire broke out

A GoFundMe page has been launched to help pay for the funerals of two brothers killed in a South Side fire earlier this week.

The brothers, 16-year-old Pedro Sanchez and 24-year-old Abelardo Sanchez were in the attic of a home in the 2000 block of West 53rd Street on Wednesday morning when a fire broke out. The brothers were trapped in the attic, and both were killed in the blaze.

Fire officials say that there was no working smoke detector in the attic at the time of the fire.

Now, a cousin of the two brothers has launched a GoFundMe page to help pay for funeral expenses.

“This tragedy has touched many of us, for me it’s about family and love,” Catalina Gamino said. “My aunt and uncle are the type of people who go out of their way to help others…and they have suffered a terrible loss that can’t be fixed with money.”

The fundraiser has already reached its goal of $20,000, but is still accepting donations. Over 600 people have already contributed funds to the cause.
