Firefighter Rescues Man From Burning Building

Dramatic rescue caught on video

Firefighters rescued a man from a burning Uptown apartment building Wednesday, a dramatic scene captured on video by a neighbor in a nearby building.

The two-alarm fire started at about 9:40 a.m. at 736 W. Buena Ave.

Officials say the fire started on the fifth floor of the building, where flames could be seen pouring out of a window. A firefighter climbed a ladder and helped resident Sammie Redmon escape from a window in a different apartment on the same floor. The two climbed down the ladder to safety.

Redmon says he was talking to his brother in his apartment when he heard a woman screaming.

"We heard the lady say, 'help, help,' so we ran in the hallway and noticed the fire," Redmon said.

Redmon says he was trapped on the floor because he was knocking on doors and telling neighbors to get out.

"I needed air. I couldn't breathe. So I was standing there and thinking I could either try to jump on a roof or jump on that tree," Redmon said.

Two women and a firefighter were injured in the fire. One of the women was listed in good to fair condition and the other was listed in fair to serious condition. The firefighter was having trouble breathing and was hospitalized as a precaution.

The fire was struck out shortly before 10 a.m.
