Dog Takes a Bite Out of Criminal

Burglar gets burgers and bitten

A convicted burglar was hoping to grab a quick bite, but it turns out the bite grabbed him.

Benjamin Thomas, 41, allegedly broke into the Ada S. McKinley-Highland School on the South Side at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Sneaking through the building, Thomas allegedly grabbed a laptop computer, a computer hard drive, a Christmas tree stand and a bag of ornaments.

Thomas must then have gotten a case of the midnight munchies because he also reportedly swiped a bag of frozen hot dogs and a box of frozen White Castle hamburgers.

The burglar never got to enjoy his loot though.

A K-9 police unit responded to the school's tripped alarm and caught Thomas walking around on the second floor.

According to police reports, Thomas resisted arrest, so the cops pepper-sprayed him and a police dog bit him on his left foot.

Thomas, who has several convictions for burglary and one rape conviction on record, was treated at South Shore Hospital and held on $225,000 bail.

Prosecutors are hoping this is an open-and-shut crave case.
