The city is making it easier for dog owners to get licenses for their pooches -- easier than the mere $5 it costs to comply with the city's licensing law, even.

The law's been largely ignored for decades, the Sun-Times reports.  Chicago has roughly 500,000 dogs. It sells only 20,745 licenses.

City Clerk Miguel del Valle is trying to boost dog licensing, and for the first time, dog owners can purchase licenses online at www.ChiCityClerk.com.

The city will then send out a sticker that fits on the back of a rabies tag. The sticker replaces the time-consuming process of using a manual crank to press expiration dates onto brass tags.

The city promises that the registration sticker will help you recover your dog if it ever gets lost (God forbid) and winds up in the hands of Animal Control.
