Construction Worker Struck and Killed on I-294 Near O'Hare

A construction worker was struck and killed by a vehicle Saturday night on I-294 near O’Hare Airport.

The crash happened about 10:15 p.m. in the northbound lanes near the interchange with I-90 in Rosemont, according to statement from Illinois State Police.

A 2013 Infiniti crossed into the closed lanes and struck the construction worker, police said. The Infiniti then struck an unoccupied van in the construction zone.

The construction worker, 59-year-old Frank Caputo, of Bartlett, was taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The driver of the Inifiniti was treated at the same hospital for minor injuries, police said.

The construction company released a statement Saturday.

"First, we want to express our sympathy and send our condolences to the Caputo family for this tragic loss," the statement read. "Second we want to assure all involved that we are taking the necessary steps to cooperate and assist in the investigation of this tragic incident. At this point, we cannot comment further until the investigation is complete."

The Illinois Tollway also issued a statement, which stated that "this incident tragically emphasizes once again the importance of drivers slowing down in work zones for the safety of our construction workers, Tollway maintenance workers, state police and first responders."

Police said the crash was still under investigation and that no charges had been filed.
