Christkindlmarket Closes Wednesday Due to High Winds

Already Wednesday morning, two vehicles were damaged and a driver injured after debris fell near the Willis Tower

Chicago’s Christkindlmarket closed Wednesday as high winds caused damage around the city.

The popular winter festival announced that its Daley Plaza location would be closed during the day but may open at 4 p.m. “weather permitting.”

The entire Chicago area is under a High Wind Warning, with wind gusts at more 60 mph reported by 11 a.m. The warning remains in effect until 6 p.m.

Already Wednesday morning, two vehicles were damaged and a driver injured after debris fell near the Willis Tower.

Further south, an SUV was nearly smashed in half and multiple cars were damaged by a falling tree in Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood.

ComEd reported nearly 15,000 people were without power in the Chicago area as of 11:30 a.m.

By 1 p.m., a lightpole that toppled over was blocking multiple southbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive just before the Michigan Avenue exit.
