Chris Bosio, Dave Martinez Among Cubs Coaches Who Could Find New Jobs

The Chicago Cubs are in the midst of some big changes to their coaching staff, but at least a few of their former coaches are already close to finding new homes.

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports and the Athletic, former Cubs pitching coach Chris Bosio is the top candidate to be the new pitching coach for the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers, who recently hired former Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire to be their skipper, are looking to bolster their coaching staff, and Bosio would fit that bill.

Bosio was let go by the Cubs last week after being with the team for six seasons. He presided over a pitching staff that included the reinvention of Jake Arrieta and the emergence of Kyle Hendricks, but the team opted to go in a new direction after their bullpen struggled throughout the 2017 campaign.

One possible destination for Bosio was crossed off the list on Thursday, as the St. Louis Cardinals hired Mike Maddux to be their new pitching coach. The San Francisco Giants are one of the teams still looking for a person to fill that role.

Cubs bench coach Dave Martinez could also be on his way elsewhere, as he is considered a strong candidate to become the new manager of the Washington Nationals. Martinez, who has been the Cubs’ bench coach for the last three seasons, has interviewed for several managerial jobs over the years, but he may finally get his chance in D.C.

“I’m really hoping Davey gets this job,” Joe Maddon said about his coach. “It’s about time he’s being considered so strongly. He’s ready to do this.”

Former Cubs assistant hitting coach Eric Hinske has already found a new gig, as he has been named the Los Angeles Angels’ new hitting coach.

Former Cubs third base coach Gary Jones and former hitting coach John Mallee were also let go on Thursday, as sweeping changes continue to rock the organization.
