Woman Speaks Out Just Weeks After Near-Fatal Shooting

Darlister Smith was shot in the back and was critically wounded in the shooting

A 65-year-old woman who was shot and critically wounded in an early October shooting on the city’s South Side is speaking out as she recovers at home, hoping to catch the person responsible for nearly ending her life.

Darlister Smith was parking her car in front of her home in the 7000 block of South Merrill on Oct. 7 when two men began arguing near her. The next thing she knew, she heard gunfire, and felt pain in her back.

“The young man to the side of me near the window of my car started shooting,” she said. “I couldn’t move, so I put my head down and started praying.”

Smith was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, but is slowly recovering at home.

Smith recently retired after a long career as a substance abuse counselor, and she’s hoping by speaking out that the man who shot her will be brought to justice.
