4 Dead, at Least 26 Wounded in Chicago Shootings Over Weekend

Five of the victims were children, according to police

Four people are dead and at least 26 others, including five children, have been injured in shootings across the city of Chicago this weekend, according to police.

In a story that generated national headlines, six people were shot in the 6300 block of South Seeley Avenue on Saturday evening. Around 6:20 p.m., a group of people were gathered on a sidewalk following a baby shower when a man fired into the crowd, striking several individuals.

A 10-year-old girl was among those shot, and she was listed in stable condition at Comer’s Children’s Hospital with a gunshot wound to her shin. An 8-year-old boy was shot in the chest and the back, and he is in stable condition at Comer’s.

A 29-year-old woman was shot in the shoulder and in the chest, and she was taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition.

Three other victims, men aged 23, 28, and 42, were also shot, and are all in stable condition at area hospitals.

No one is in custody, and police are still investigating.

The city’s first fatal shooting occurred just after 2:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon in the 800 block of North Springfield, according to authorities. A 25-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk when a person in a light-colored sedan pulled up and began firing shots at him, striking him in the back.

The man was taken to Norwegian Hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.

Just before 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, two men were shot in the 1700 block of West Steuben. The pair were standing in an alley when a light-colored SUV pulled up, and an occupant inside then opened fire.

A 22-year-old man was shot in the head, and was taken to Christ Hospital in good condition. A 19-year-old man was shot in the buttocks, and he was later pronounced dead at Christ Hospital.

Just after 6 a.m. on Sunday morning, a 32-year-old man was shot multiple times in the 6600 block of South Maryland, according to police. The man was hit multiple times in the back, and he was later pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Just two hours later in the 6700 block of South Normal Boulevard, another man was shot and killed. This man, a 52-year-old, was found lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his head, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Here are the rest of the weekend’s shootings:

Friday:

  • A 17-year-old boy was shot in the thigh during an attempted robbery in the 2700 block of South Indiana, according to police. At approximately 5:22 p.m., a person attempted to rob the teen, and when he refused to cooperate, he was shot. He was taken to Northwestern Hospital in serious condition.
  • Just after 10:30 p.m. in the 8500 block of South Buffalo, a 42-year-old woman was outside when a person in a passing grey Buick Regal fired shots at her, striking her in the head. She was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition.

Saturday:

  • A 39-year-old man is in critical condition after he was shot in the 200 block of North Long at approximately 4:14 a.m., police say. The man was standing on a street when another man walked up to him and opened fire, striking him multiple times in the abdomen.
  • Two people were shot just before 3:30 p.m. in the 10300 block of South Corliss Avenue, police say. The two men were on the front porch of a residence when a person walked up to them and opened fire. A 43-year-old man was shot in the face, and a 20-year-old man was shot in both legs. Both were taken to Christ Hospital in stable condition. The gunman fled the scene in a silver vehicle.
  • In the 0-100 block of East 102nd Street at approximately 5:15 p.m., a 27-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk when a person inside a dark SUV began firing shots at him. The man was shot in the right arm and left thigh, and was in stable condition at Metro South Hospital, according to authorities.
  • At approximately 8:21 p.m., a 13-year-old boy was riding in the front seat of a car in the 1200 block of West 73rd Street when two men opened fire, striking him in the right hip. The boy was taken to Comer’s Hospital in stable condition.
  • A 29-year-old man was shot in the right foot in the 7900 block of South Halsted at approximately 8:28 p.m., police say. The man says he was shot by a person in a black four-door sedan. He was taken to St. Bernard Hospital in stable condition.

Sunday:

  • In the 4100 block of West Belmont at approximately 12:24 a.m., a 29-year-old man was riding in a vehicle when he was shot in the legs. He was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital in stable condition, according to police.
  • A 28-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk in the 4900 block of West Hubbard at approximately 1:30 a.m. when two men in a vacant lot fired shots at him, striking him in the right leg. He was taken to West Suburban Hospital in stable condition, police say.
  • Three men are in stable condition after they were shot while standing on the street in the 3900 block of West Wilcox at approximately 3:26 a.m., according to police. The victims, ages 26, 33, and 34, were taken to area hospitals with various injuries.
  • A 33-year-old man was riding in a vehicle when another vehicle pulled up alongside and an occupant opened fire, police say. The incident occurred at approximately 4:20 a.m. in the 1900 block of West Ogden. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition. 
  • Just before 5 a.m. in the 5100 block of West Madison, a 28-year-old man was riding in a Buick Regal when a person in a white Chrysler fired shots at him, striking him multiple times. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.
  • Just before 10 a.m. in the 2000 block of West 68th Place, a 45-year-old man was shot while standing in an alley, according to police. The man was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.
  • A 39-year-old man was shot in the 3600 block of West Douglas at approximately 5:23 p.m., according to police. The man transported himself to Mount Sinai with a gunshot wound to his lower back, and he’s listed in good condition.
  • In the 6200 block of South Francisco just before 6 p.m., a 15-year-old boy was standing in an alley when a person in a light colored sedan fired shots at him, striking him in the leg. He was taken to Holy Cross in stable condition, according to police.
  • A 20-year-old man was shot multiple times in the back in the 1700 block of East 71st Street at approximately 8:38 p.m., according to police. The man was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.
