Chicago Police Officer Shoots Man After Traffic Stop

Authorities are investigating after an officer shot a man during a traffic stop on Chicago’s Southwest Side Sunday evening, according to police.

Just before 8 p.m., officers conducting a narcotics investigation conducted a traffic stop in the 4200 block of South Ashland Avenue in the city’s Back of the Yards neighborhood, Chicago police said in a statement.

The officers told the occupants of the vehicle to exit the car, at which point an adult male “pushed an officer and then fled on foot in the direction of multiple parked tractor trailers,” according to police.

Authorities said a foot chase ensued and an officer chased the suspect into the Ashland Cold Storage Facility before a confrontation ensued and the officer opened fire, striking the man. He was taken to an area hospital where he was listed in serious condition, officials said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting, according to police. The officer was placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days, as is standard procedure in all police-involved shootings.
