As more than 1,000 additional officers take to the streets for the Labor Day weekend, Chicago police have arrested at least a dozen people on illegal weapons charges.

According to a press release from the department, 12 people have been arrested on weapons charges and more than 40 illegal guns have been seized as part of a concerted effort to crack down on gun violence in the city.

One raid, conducted in the 6600 block of South California, was part of an investigation into organized crime. Approximately 300 counterfeit merchandise items were recovered, along with ammunition, two handguns, and approximately $5,000 in cash.

The CPD Marine Unit will also be active this weekend after a string of recent drownings on Lake Michigan.

As of Friday night, more than 170 people in total had been taken into police custody, including numerous arrests for possession of controlled substances.
