Chicago May Trash 3-Man Garbage Crews

Union warns automated trucks will mean more trash left on streets

Chicago's days of using garbage trucks with one man driving and two collecting may soon be over, the Sun-Times reported.

The city is looking into buying up to 200 "automated, side-loading refuse trucks" that would need only a two-person crew.

The move could lead to layoffs and cuts in the quality of trash service Chicagoans are accustomed to, union officials said.

A test of the trucks on the North Side was "disastrous," the official said, and he's surprised the city would go forward with the plan.

The city isn't committing to buying the automated trucks, Streets and San told the Sun-Times.
