Report: Chicago Cubs Showing Interest in Cole Hamels

Hamels has a 4.72 ERA and a 5-9 record this season

The Chicago Cubs are watching options fly off the board as they prepare for next week’s MLB trade deadline, but there is one intriguing starting pitcher that the team is reportedly kicking the tires on.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Cubs are “making inroads” into trying to acquire pitcher Cole Hamels from the Texas Rangers.

Hamels, who has a 4.72 ERA and a 5-9 record this season, has a 20-team no trade clause in his contract, but the Cubs are not on that list, meaning the Rangers do not need his approval to trade him to Chicago.

Hamels has become an option for the Cubs as they’ve dealt with the absence of Yu Darvish, the continued struggles of Tyler Chatwood, and inconsistent production from Kyle Hendricks and Jose Quintana.

Add to that the injuries they’re dealing with in their bullpen, with closer Brandon Morrow out, and their lineup, with Kris Bryant on the disabled list, and the Cubs could use a shot in the arm as the trade deadline approaches.
