Cab Driver Stabbed in West Ridge

Driver said two men jumped out of his car and into a getaway vehicle after attack on Chicago's Far North Side

A cab driver says he was stabbed during a robbery in the West Ridge neighborhood early Friday on the Chicago's Far North Side.

The driver told police he picked up three men near West Devon and North Western avenues around 3 a.m. and started taking them to their destination on the 6700 block of North California.

A few minutes into the ride, one of the men announced a robbery. After taking the cabbie's cash, one of the men stabbed the driver several times before both got out and jumped into a getaway car that was waiting for them.

The cab driver then continued driving north on California and ended up hitting a southbound SUV. The driver of that vehicle was not injured and may have called police for help.

"They have knife and they put that knife on his neck," said Hamza Khazi, who identified himself as a friend of the cab driver. "He was just trying to defend himself and they hit with the knife on his forearm."

The driver, whose name and age were not publicly released as of 6 a.m., was stabbed in the leg and arm and taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, police said.
